Residential Generator FAQs

Home standby generators should be serviced once a year or after every 100–150 hours of runtime. Regular maintenance helps prevent unexpected failures and keeps your generator ready for outages.
All major manufacturers — Generac, Kohler, Cummins, and Briggs & Stratton — recommend annual servicing in their owner’s manuals to maintain reliability and warranty coverage.

Our residential PM service includes oil and filter changes, battery testing, system inspection, and full functional testing. We also pressure wash the generator and perform an infrared test on the transfer switch to catch hidden electrical issues early and keep the unit looking clean and professional. Batteries should be replaced every 4 to 5 years to ensure reliable starting performance, especially during long or repeated outages.

In North and West Vancouver and surrounding areas, most standby generators are installed to back up sump pumps or other critical systems. Many new homeowners don’t realize these generators require regular service to ensure the sump pump will actually work during a power outage. Over the past few years, we’ve seen multiple homes suffer tens of thousands of dollars in flood damage because generators weren’t maintained — and in many cases, insurance claims were denied due to lack of upkeep. Preventative maintenance is far less costly than repair and protects your home when it matters most.

While we’ve installed generators in the past, we now work with reputable installers for new residential projects. Pac Power focuses on consulting, commissioning, and long-term maintenance, which is where our expertise and specialization lie. This approach ensures every installation meets CSA standards and performs reliably for years to come.
